Plan your Scotland itinerary
Most first-time visitors need about seven days: enough for one city, the Highlands and an island. With five days, pick one Highland loop. With ten, slow down rather than add more stops. Every route below is built by the Best Scotland planner, with honest driving times.

Questions
How many days do you need in Scotland?
Seven days is the sweet spot for a first trip: one city, the Highlands and one island. Five days works for a single Highland loop; ten days lets you add more islands or wildlife without rushing.
Can you see Scotland without a car?
Yes, but you see a different Scotland. Trains link Edinburgh, Glasgow, Stirling, Inverness and the Cairngorms well; the west coast islands and remote glens are much harder without a car.
Should you start in Edinburgh or Glasgow?
Either works. Edinburgh suits trips heading north through the Cairngorms; Glasgow is closer to Loch Lomond, Glencoe and the west coast.
What do most Scotland itineraries get wrong?
Too many places. Scotland is bigger and its roads slower than it looks, so a route that changes base every night ends up as a week in the car.
