Isle of Skye without a car
Yes, you can visit Skye without a car — but you'll see less of it. Getting there is easy by train, coach and ferry; getting around the island is the hard part. Base yourself in Portree, accept that some famous sights need a tour, and give it at least three nights.

Can you visit Skye without a car?
Yes, but it's one of the harder parts of Scotland to do car-free. Of everywhere we cover, Skye is among the places that lose most without a car: the island is big, and many of its best-known walks start from remote car parks.
How do you get there?
Three realistic ways:
Train from Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh
Ends a short hop from the Skye Bridge; onward buses cross to the island.
Coach to Portree
Citylink coaches run to Portree from Glasgow and Inverness.
Train to Mallaig, ferry to Armadale
The West Highland Line from Glasgow, then a CalMac ferry to south Skye.
We don't hold verified timetables or frequencies for these services. Check ScotRail, Citylink and CalMac before you book, especially outside summer.
Where should you base yourself?
Portree. It's where the coaches stop, it has the most places to eat, and local buses and tours start from there. Staying anywhere more remote without a car leaves you stuck.
What can you realistically reach?
Portree itself, the harbour and short walks around town, plus whatever the local bus network reaches in the season you travel. Check routes on arrival rather than planning a full day around a single bus.
What becomes difficult without a car?
The Trotternish loop (Old Man of Storr, the Quiraing), Neist Point, the Fairy Pools and Elgol. These are the reasons most people come, and they're spread across the island on single-track roads.
Tour or public transport?
For the big sights, a tour. A guided day from Portree covers in one day what would take several days of bus connections — if the buses run at all. Use public transport to get to and from Skye, and a tour to see it.
How many days should you allow?
At least three nights on the island. One day disappears getting there and one getting back, and you'll want a spare day in case a tour is cancelled for weather.
Can Best Scotland plan a car-free trip that includes Skye?
Yes. Tell the planner you won't have a car and name Skye as a must-see, and it builds a car-free trip with Skye in it — and shows you the trade-offs.
