Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1
Cathedral, Necropolis and Merchant City
Morning
Arrive and drop your bags. Don't pick up a hire car today. Glasgow is compact, and parking in the centre is expensive.
Afternoon
Glasgow Cathedral and the Necropolis. The only mainland medieval cathedral to survive the Reformation more or less intact. Then walk up the Necropolis behind it for the best view over the city. Allow two hours for both.
Evening
Dinner in the Merchant City. Plenty of choice within a few streets. Keep it easy.
Collect the hire car on the morning you leave. The drive out to Loch Lomond starts from the west of the city.

Trotternish loop
Morning
Old Man of Storr. Start early. The car park fills up by mid-morning and the path gets busy. Allow two hours up and back.
Afternoon
The Quiraing. Carry on north round the Trotternish loop. Walk as far along the Quiraing path as you like; even half an hour is worth it.
Evening
Back to Portree. Dinner in Portree. Book ahead in summer; tables go fast.
Single-track roads. Use the passing places, and let locals past.
Stay: Isle of Skye

On the road. An easy last morning: about an hour to Glasgow.
Afternoon
Lunch. Stop at Doune Castle on the way if it's open (Outlander and Monty Python fans will know it). Lunch in Glasgow.
Evening
Arrival. Arrive in Glasgow early afternoon. Drop the car first, then walk.
Realistic driving notes
Plan on about 11 hrs at the wheel over the trip, with the longest day at 4 hrs. Highland and island roads are slower than the map suggests, so leave time for stops, single-track roads and photos.
What we left out
Isle of Mull
But fitting it in adds about 3 hrs 30 mins of driving and steals time from Isle of Skye.
Isle of Arran
But fitting it in adds about 5 hrs of driving and steals time from Isle of Skye.
Oban
Close call. It's nearby, but another hotel change would cost you a proper day in Isle of Skye.
