Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1
Old Town on foot
Morning
Edinburgh Castle. Book a timed ticket and go at opening. It is quieter, and the views over the city are clearest in the morning.
Afternoon
The Royal Mile and closes. Walk down the Royal Mile slowly and duck into the closes on either side. That is where the Old Town actually is.
Evening
Dinner in the Old Town or Stockbridge. Keep it simple. You have a long day tomorrow or a jet-lagged body tonight, probably both.
Parking in central Edinburgh is expensive and slow. Pick up the hire car on the morning you leave.
Stay: Edinburgh
Day 2 · 4 hrs 45 mins driving
Edinburgh to Skye
Morning
On the road. Leave Edinburgh by 9. Up the A9 through Perthshire, then west from Dalwhinnie to Spean Bridge and on to the Skye road. This is the scenic way in, not a transfer.
Afternoon
Lunch. Coffee in Pitlochry if you need it, but eat in Spean Bridge. The Commando Memorial is two minutes up the road and has the best Ben Nevis view you'll get from a car park.
Evening
Arrival. Eilean Donan is on the way to the bridge. Treat it as a photo stop from the causeway (15 minutes). Go inside only if you've made good time and have another hour; last entry varies by season. Then check in, eat, sleep.
Stay: Isle of Skye
Day 3
Trotternish loop
Morning
Old Man of Storr. Start early. The car park fills up by mid-morning and the path gets busy. Allow two hours up and back.
Afternoon
The Quiraing. Carry on north round the Trotternish loop. Walk as far along the Quiraing path as you like; even half an hour is worth it.
Evening
Back to Portree. Dinner in Portree. Book ahead in summer; tables go fast.
Single-track roads. Use the passing places, and let locals past.
Stay: Isle of Skye
Day 4
West Skye and Dunvegan
Morning
Dunvegan Castle. Seat of the MacLeods for eight centuries. Open 1 April to 15 October. Go at opening, then walk the gardens.
Afternoon
Neist Point, then Talisker. Walk out to the lighthouse at the far west: steep path, big views, very exposed. Allow 1.5 hours. Then Talisker distillery at Carbost on the way back. Book an afternoon tour in advance; experience times vary.
Evening
Dinner in Portree or Carbost. The Old Inn at Carbost for a pint by the loch, or back to Portree.
Talisker is open 10–5 March to October and 10–4:30 November to February. Annual maintenance from 11 October to 1 November 2026 may affect tours. Dunvegan Castle is closed from mid-October to the end of March.
Stay: Isle of Skye
Day 5 · 3 hrs 15 mins driving
Skye to Oban
Morning
On the road. Over the Skye Bridge and down the A87 and A82 to Fort William, then along Loch Linnhe to Ballachulish and the coast road to Oban.
Afternoon
Lunch. Lunch in Glencoe village or Ballachulish. The big Glencoe viewpoints, the Three Sisters, are about 15 minutes further east than the Oban turn-off, so it's a 30-minute round trip. Worth it once, in clear weather.
Evening
Arrival. Arrive in Oban mid-afternoon. Walk the seafront and climb to McCaig's Tower before dinner.
Stay: Oban
Day 6
Day on Mull
Morning
Ferry to Mull. Take a ferry around 9 or 10 to Craignure (about 45 minutes). With a car, start at Duart Castle, five minutes from the pier: the Macleans' clifftop castle, open 1 April to 25 October.
Afternoon
Tobermory. Drive 40 minutes north for lunch among the coloured houses, then a harbour walk. Leave Tobermory by mid-afternoon to make a return sailing around 5.
Evening
Seafood in Oban. Back in Oban for dinner at the pier. Don't plan around the last ferry: if one is cancelled, you want a spare.
Book the car on the ferry in advance and check in 30 minutes before sailing. CalMac timetables change by season and sailings can be cancelled in wind. Going on foot? Make Tobermory the day and skip Duart: there's no public transport to the castle, it's about a 3-mile walk, and taxis are limited.
Stay: Oban
Day 7 · 2 hrs 30 mins driving
Oban to Edinburgh
Morning
Last morning in Oban. Walk the seafront and pick up smoked salmon for the road. Leave by 10 to reach Edinburgh by late afternoon.
Afternoon
Lunch. If the weather is clear, walk around the outside of Kilchurn Castle at the head of Loch Awe. It's closed for conservation work, there's no parking at the castle and the path can flood, so skip it in bad weather. Lunch in Tyndrum or Callander.
Evening
Arrival. Arrive in Edinburgh by late afternoon, drop the car and walk to a last dinner.
Realistic driving notes
Plan on about 10 hrs 30 mins at the wheel over the trip, with the longest day at 4 hrs 45 mins. Highland and island roads are slower than the map suggests, so leave time for stops, single-track roads and photos.
What we left out
Isle of Mull
But fitting it in adds about 2 hrs 45 mins of driving and steals time from Isle of Skye.
Isle of Arran
But fitting it in adds about 4 hrs 45 mins of driving and steals time from Isle of Skye.
Inverness
But fitting it in adds about 1 hr 15 mins of driving and steals time from Isle of Skye.
An easier alternative
Edinburgh → Cairngorms National Park → Isle of Skye → Callander → Edinburgh — 10 hrs 15 mins of driving. Less driving and a gentler pace, but not as strong a match for the the things you asked for you asked for.
Questions
Is 7 days enough for Scotland?
Yes, for one well-chosen loop. In seven days you can comfortably cover 3 bases. Trying to add the far north, Orkney or several islands as well turns the week into a driving holiday.
How much driving does this route involve?
About 10 hrs 30 mins in total over the week. The longest single drive is 4 hrs 45 mins, and some days have no long drive at all.
Where should you spend the most nights?
Isle of Skye. Spending more nights in fewer places means you unpack once and explore properly instead of checking in and out every morning.
Do you need a car for this itinerary?
Yes. Parts of this route are poorly served by public transport. Without a car, a train-based route through Edinburgh, Inverness and the Cairngorms works better.
