The Quiraing on the Isle of Skye

How long does Edinburgh to Isle of Skye take?

About 4 hrs 40 mins at the wheel. With lunch and one or two short stops, that is most of the day.

What's the best route?

Leave Edinburgh by 9. Up the A9 through Perthshire, then west from Dalwhinnie to Spean Bridge and on to the Skye road. This is the scenic way in, not a transfer.

Where is worth stopping?

  • Lunch: Coffee in Pitlochry if you need it, but eat in Spean Bridge. The Commando Memorial is two minutes up the road and has the best Ben Nevis view you'll get from a car park.

Arriving: Eilean Donan is on the way to the bridge. Treat it as a photo stop from the causeway (15 minutes). Go inside only if you've made good time and have another hour; last entry varies by season. Then check in, eat, sleep.

This is a long day: about 4h40 of driving before any stops. Don't add a Skye sightseeing loop on arrival. The island will still be there tomorrow.

If it's wet: In heavy rain, skip Pitlochry and the memorial and drive straight through.

Transfer day or sightseeing day?

A travel day. With the stops worth making, it fills most of the day. Plan nothing on Skye that evening beyond checking in and eating.

What shouldn't you cram in?

Don't add Loch Ness, Glencoe and Eilean Donan's interior to the same day, and don't plan a Skye loop on arrival. If you want Glencoe, stay a night there and split the journey.

Is public transport realistic?

Possible, but slow. The usual options are a train to Inverness and then a coach or the train to Kyle of Lochalsh, or a train to Glasgow and a coach up the A82. It is a full day either way. We don't yet hold verified public transport times for this journey, so check ScotRail and Citylink before you book.

Planning Scotland without a car

Where should you stay on Skye?

Portree if you want restaurants and an easy base; north Skye for quiet; Broadford or the south if your next drive heads back to the mainland.

  • South Skye or Broadford if tomorrow's route heads south.
  • Portree if you want restaurants and convenience. North Skye if you want quiet.
  • Portree, or Dunvegan if you want to be closer to the west.

How this fits into a bigger trip

Most first-time routes from Edinburgh reach Skye on day two or three. Give the island at least two nights — three is better — so the long drive earns its keep.
