How long does Edinburgh to Glencoe take?
About 2 hrs 45 mins at the wheel. With lunch and one proper stop, you still arrive with the afternoon free.
What's the best route?
Northwest past Stirling, then up the A82 via Crianlarich and across Rannoch Moor into the glen.
Where is worth stopping?
Lunch: Lunch at Tyndrum or Crianlarich.
Arriving: Arrive mid-afternoon. A short walk to Signal Rock or a drink at the Clachaig is plenty for today.
The first view of Buachaille Etive Mòr, just before the glen, is the moment. Pull in safely.
If it's wet: If it's wet, go to the Glencoe Visitor Centre on arrival.
Transfer day or sightseeing day?
A half-day drive with time to spare. You arrive mid-afternoon with energy for a short walk — the big walks are for the next morning.
What shouldn't you cram in?
Don't do Glencoe as a day trip from Edinburgh. That's around five and a half hours in the car to see the glen through a windscreen. Stay at least one night.
Is public transport realistic?
Partly. Coaches run along the A82 through the glen, but the glen's walks start from lay-bys and car parks without stops of their own. We don't hold verified times for this route. Without a car, Fort William is the easier base for this area.
Where should you stay in Glencoe?
Glencoe village or Ballachulish — both put the walks and the Clachaig Inn within easy reach.
- Glencoe village or Ballachulish
How this fits into a bigger trip
Glencoe works as the first night out of Edinburgh on the way to Skye or Fort William, splitting a long drive into two good days.
