The Quiraing on the Isle of Skye

How long does Glasgow to Isle of Skye take?

About 4 hrs 30 mins at the wheel. With lunch and one or two short stops, that is most of the day.

What's the best route?

Up the A82 along Loch Lomond, across Rannoch Moor and through Glencoe to Fort William, then west on the A87 to the Skye Bridge.

Where is worth stopping?

  • Loch Lomond (Luss)

The first hour is the best lochside driving of the trip. Luss is the easy place to stretch your legs.

  • Glencoe

The road runs straight through the glen. Stop for the views, but a proper walk needs its own day.

  • Fort William

The natural lunch stop before the quieter road west.

  • Second half: Glencoe to Skye

North to Fort William, then west on the A87 over the bridge to Skye.

Lunch: Lunch in Fort William before the quieter stretch.

Arriving: Check in and keep the first evening light. Save the big Skye loops for full days.

Start early. The A87 into Skye gets slow behind caravans by midday.

If it's wet: Rain doesn't change this drive much. Just allow more time.

Transfer day or sightseeing day?

This is the most scenic way onto Skye, which makes it tempting to stop everywhere. Treat it as a long travel day with two or three short stops — or split it with a night in Glencoe.

What shouldn't you cram in?

Don't try to walk in Glencoe and still reach Skye before dark. Single-track roads on Skye are harder at night. If Glencoe matters to you, give it a night.

Is public transport realistic?

Yes, with planning. Citylink coaches run up the A82 to Skye, and the West Highland Line runs to Mallaig, where a ferry crosses to Armadale on south Skye. We don't yet hold verified times for either, so check ScotRail, Citylink and CalMac before you book.

Planning Scotland without a car

Where should you stay on Skye?

Portree for convenience, north Skye for quiet, or Broadford and the south if you arrive late or leave by the Mallaig ferry.

  • South Skye or Broadford if tomorrow's route heads south.
  • Portree if you want restaurants and convenience. North Skye if you want quiet.
  • Portree, or Dunvegan if you want to be closer to the west.

How this fits into a bigger trip

Glasgow suits west coast trips: Skye first via Glencoe, then back through the Cairngorms or down via Oban. Our 7-day road trip starts here.
