The Quiraing on the Isle of Skye

How long does Inverness to Isle of Skye take?

About 2 hrs 50 mins at the wheel. With lunch and one proper stop, you still arrive with the afternoon free.

What's the best route?

South-west along Loch Ness, across to the A87 through Glen Shiel, past Eilean Donan and over the Skye Bridge.

Where is worth stopping?

  • Loch Ness

The road follows the loch for the first stretch. Urquhart Castle is right on the route if you want one proper stop.

  • Eilean Donan

On the A87 just before the bridge. A 15-minute photo stop from the causeway; go inside only if you have an hour spare.

Transfer day or sightseeing day?

The shortest drive to Skye from any Scottish city, so this one can be a half-sightseeing day: one castle on the way and still a free evening on the island.

What shouldn't you cram in?

Don't add a Loch Ness cruise, Urquhart Castle and Eilean Donan's interior to one morning. Pick one.

Is public transport realistic?

Yes. The Kyle of Lochalsh line runs from Inverness to the edge of Skye and is one of the best rail journeys in Scotland; coaches also run to Portree. We don't hold verified timetables, so check ScotRail and Citylink before you book.

Planning Scotland without a car

Where should you stay on Skye?

Portree if you're arriving by bus or want restaurants; north Skye for quiet; Broadford if you want the shortest drive from the bridge.

  • South Skye or Broadford if tomorrow's route heads south.
  • Portree if you want restaurants and convenience. North Skye if you want quiet.
  • Portree, or Dunvegan if you want to be closer to the west.

How this fits into a bigger trip

Inverness makes a good start for a Highlands-and-Skye trip: Skye first, then down the west coast or back across to the Cairngorms.
