  • Travellers who want the Highlands and islands without rushing
  • Wildlife and walking lovers

Not ideal for: Visitors who only want cities — Edinburgh and Glasgow need far fewer days.

Do you need a car?

Yes. This route is planned for self-drive. See Scotland without a car.

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Old Town on foot

    Morning

Edinburgh Castle. Book a timed ticket and go at opening. It is quieter, and the views over the city are clearest in the morning.

    Afternoon

The Royal Mile and closes. Walk down the Royal Mile slowly and duck into the closes on either side. That is where the Old Town actually is.

    Evening

Dinner in the Old Town or Stockbridge. Keep it simple. You have a long day tomorrow or a jet-lagged body tonight, probably both.

Parking in central Edinburgh is expensive and slow. Pick up the hire car on the morning you leave.

    Stay: Edinburgh

  2. Day 2 · 2 hrs 30 mins driving

    Edinburgh to the Cairngorms

    Morning

On the road. North over the Forth and up the A9 through Perthshire.

    Afternoon

Lunch. Lunch in Pitlochry or Dunkeld.

    Evening

Arrival. Arrive in Aviemore with time for an easy walk.

    Stay: Cairngorms National Park

  3. Day 3

    Cairngorms day

    Morning

Loch an Eilein. An easy walk round a loch with a ruined castle on an island. Good first walk in the park.

    Afternoon

Cairngorm Mountain or Rothiemurchus. Up the mountain if the weather is clear. Otherwise explore Rothiemurchus forest.

    Evening

    Aviemore. Dinner in Aviemore.

Mountain weather changes fast. Check the forecast before heading up high.

    Stay: Cairngorms National Park

  4. Day 4

    Cairngorms day

    Morning

Loch an Eilein. An easy walk round a loch with a ruined castle on an island. Good first walk in the park.

    Afternoon

Cairngorm Mountain or Rothiemurchus. Up the mountain if the weather is clear. Otherwise explore Rothiemurchus forest.

    Evening

    Aviemore. Dinner in Aviemore.

Mountain weather changes fast. Check the forecast before heading up high.

    Stay: Cairngorms National Park

  5. Day 5 · 2 hrs 45 mins driving

    Cairngorms to Skye

On the way: Loch Ness (easy stop on your route)

    Morning

On the road. West via Inverness or Spean Bridge, then out to Skye over the bridge.

    Afternoon

Lunch. Lunch on the way. Plenty of options near Inverness or Fort Augustus.

    Evening

Arrival. Keep the first evening on Skye light.

    Stay: Isle of Skye

  6. Day 6

    West Skye and Dunvegan

    Morning

Dunvegan Castle. Seat of the MacLeods for eight centuries. Open 1 April to 15 October. Go at opening, then walk the gardens.

    Afternoon

Neist Point, then Talisker. Walk out to the lighthouse at the far west: steep path, big views, very exposed. Allow 1.5 hours. Then Talisker distillery at Carbost on the way back. Book an afternoon tour in advance; experience times vary.

    Evening

Dinner in Portree or Carbost. The Old Inn at Carbost for a pint by the loch, or back to Portree.

Talisker is open 10–5 March to October and 10–4:30 November to February. Annual maintenance from 11 October to 1 November 2026 may affect tours. Dunvegan Castle is closed from mid-October to the end of March.

    Stay: Isle of Skye

  7. Day 7

    Fairy Pools and Elgol

    Morning

Fairy Pools. Go early. It's a short walk from the car park, and the light is better in the morning.

    Afternoon

Boat trip from Elgol. A boat to Loch Coruisk is one of the best things you can do on Skye. Book ahead; trips depend on the weather.

    Evening

Sligachan. A drink at the Sligachan Hotel with the Cuillin behind it.

Elgol boat trips sell out in summer.

    Stay: Isle of Skye

  8. Day 8 · 2 hrs 15 mins driving

    Skye to Fort William

    Morning

On the road. Over the bridge and down the A87 and A82. It's one of the best short drives in Scotland.

    Afternoon

Lunch. Lunch at Kyle of Lochalsh or on the way into Fort William.

    Evening

Arrival. Arrive by mid-afternoon. Take a short walk up Glen Nevis before dinner.

    Stay: Fort William

  9. Day 9

    Glen Nevis and the Ben

    Morning

Glen Nevis walk. Drive to the top of Glen Nevis and walk to Steall Falls. It takes about an hour each way and gives you big-mountain scenery without a summit.

    Afternoon

Nevis Range gondola. Take the gondola up Aonach Mòr for the view across to the Ben. Check the wind forecast first, because it shuts in high winds.

    Evening

Dinner in town. Keep it simple in Fort William. It's a working town, not a pretty one, and that's fine.

Steall Falls path has drops and a wire bridge. Wear proper shoes.

    Stay: Fort William

  10. Day 10 · 3 hrs driving

    Fort William to Edinburgh

    Morning

On the road. South through Glencoe and across Rannoch Moor, then down past Loch Lomond or via Crianlarich and Stirling.

    Afternoon

Lunch. Lunch at Tyndrum. It's the classic halfway stop.

    Evening

Arrival. Aim to reach Edinburgh by late afternoon. Drop the car first. You don't want it in the city centre.

Realistic driving notes

Plan on about 10 hrs 30 mins at the wheel over the trip, with the longest day at 3 hrs. Highland and island roads are slower than the map suggests, so leave time for stops, single-track roads and photos.

What we left out

  • Isle of Mull

But fitting it in adds about 4 hrs 30 mins of driving and steals time from Isle of Skye.

  • Isle of Arran

But fitting it in adds about 5 hrs 15 mins of driving and steals time from Isle of Skye.

  • Oban

Close call. It's nearby, but another hotel change would cost you a proper day in Isle of Skye.

Questions

Is 10 days in Scotland enough?

Ten days is a comfortable length for one loop with 4 bases. It still isn't enough for everything — the far north and Orkney are better saved for another trip.

How much driving does this route involve?

About 10 hrs 30 mins across ten days, with the longest drive at 3 hrs.

Where should you spend the most nights?

Cairngorms National Park. Islands and the Highlands take longer to explore than the map suggests, so they get the longest stays.

Do you need a car for this itinerary?

Yes. Islands and Highland glens are hard to reach by bus. If you don't drive, our without-a-car route uses trains instead.
